A story about when God told me “no” ❤️
It was a rainy day and I was beginning to feel that mid-day slump.
I so desperately wanted to go grab myself a coffee and some lunch from a local coffee shop so I jumped in the car.
I had a specific coffee shop in mind that I wanted to visit, but I so clearly remember I felt the Holy Spirit restricting me and saying “no.”
Ok, maybe that wasn’t the right one….
Maybe He was protecting me from something there?
Let me try another one!
It was closed.
Ok, Lord, I clearly get the picture. You are saying no to this desire.
(Reminder to self: Always listen and obey the promptings of the Holy Spirit).
So I began driving home and felt led to stop at a grocery store.
Here, I was led to get all the ingredients to actually make a specific meal and of course a few things to make my own iced coffee at home!
When I got home I then prepared this meal, and it turned out on upon my return home we would receive a visitor to our home who was in need of shelter and a warm, home cooked meal.
(How embarrassing would it have been if I had only brought enough food home for myself? I would have felt terrible. Thanks for saving me from that God!)
NOT only that, once we had all finished eating together (which was fun in and of itself and a great time of conversation and laughter), we then had PLENTY of enough food to pack up all the leftovers for this person to actually bring to share with more of their family for dinner.
“And don’t forget to do good and to share with those in need. These are the sacrifices that please God.” Hebrews 13:16
After hearing that story, can you imagine if I would have just grabbed food for myself?
Looking back I feel so small and simple-minded. So selfish.
And it leads me to question, how often are we limiting God’s plan and power in our life because we are self-focused?
What amazing moments, memories and ministry opportunities are we robbing ourselves from due to selfishness?
Scripture says, “The person who loves his life and pampers himself will MISS true life! But the one who detaches his life from this world and abandons himself to Me [God] and My plans, will find true life and enjoy it forever!”
I still remember that day I thought, “Really God?! I can’t just go to a coffee shop?! This doesn’t make sense.”
Wow, has He opened my eyes to see that His plans for us may not make sense at the moment but we can TRUST that His plans are good. His plans are bigger and more impactful than we could ever imagine. The question is, are we willing to lay down and surrender OUR plan and OUR desires for His? Are we willing to accept His “no” even when it seems inconvenient and doesn’t make sense.
A long time ago the Lord spoke something to me that I remind myself on a daily basis, “be disciplined in your actions/choices or you will BE disciplined for your actions/choices.”
Think about it… if we are disciplined in our eating and eat a healthy balanced diet we will hear good reports from our doctor. However, if we choose not to eat a healthy, balanced diet we may receive a not so great diagnosis of high cholesterol or diabetes. In life, it’s unavoidable. If we are not disciplined in our choices, there are consequences and discipline.
The same is true in our relationship with God. We must be disciplined to seek, listen and obey God’s word and the Holy Spirit’s promptings or we will experience God’s discipline and correction.
“My child, don’t reject the Lord’s discipline, and don’t be upset when he corrects you. For the Lord corrects those he loves, just as a father corrects a child in whom he delights.” Proverbs 3:11-12
“Rather, he must be hospitable, one who loves what is good, who is self-controlled, upright, holy and DISCIPLINED.”
Today I challenge you to pray for God to speak to you! For God to show you HIS plan for your day and not your own!
Ask Him to guide you and direct you and when you look back you will see His faithfulness!
“I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will counsel you with my loving eye on you.” Psalm 32:8
“The Lord directs the steps of the godly. He delights in every detail of their lives.” Psalms 37:23
“Whether you turn to the right or to the left, your ears will hear a voice behind you, saying, “This is the way; walk in it.” Isaiah 30:21
All it takes are people willing to lay down theirs own plans and desires to listen and take on His to see our world changed!
